An account of the American Civil War
Earlier this ‘summer’, my wife and I had a holiday in the United States which included a visit to the Civil War battlefield of Gettysburg [my account here]. Our one day tour of the site led me to buy a history of the American Civil War so that i could put the Battle of Gettysburg in context.
I have now read the book and reviewed it here.

I just read your review of Catton’s book and want to compliment you for such astute observations for a non-American.
After the Revolution, the Civil War was and remains the most transformative event in our history. Millions of Southerners today couldn’t tell you the countries involved in WW I, but they can give you chapter and verse on where their great-great grandaddies fought in the War for Southern Independence.
Great review.
