Did you know that there was a typographical error at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC?
Here’s what happened:
The mistake: In Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address, engraved on the memorial’s north interior wall, the word “FUTURE” was accidentally carved as “EUTURE.”
The correction: The engraver, Ernest C. Bairstow, had mistakenly carved an “E” instead of an “F.” The extra horizontal stroke was filled in to correct the letter.
Why you can still see it: The repair remains faintly visible in the marble, so visitors who know where to look can spot the evidence of the original mistake.
