And he’s off …

“So now we have a presidential campaign boosting a candidate who is the most pro-labour politician in America today, run by a labour studies professor (I’m not making this up) who until yesterday was running a workers’ rights organization. This is the kind of politics we haven’t seen in America for more than a generation.”

This is my good friend Eric Lee – himself an American and union activist – writing on his blog about the candidacy of Democrat John Edwards declared today. There’s little doubt that, in terms of political positioning, Edwards would be my candidate too. But politics is not rational and it is full of surprises and, on that basis, as explained in this posting I’m still expecting Barack Obama to shock the Democratic establishment and win over the Democratic activists. If nothing else, it’ll give Eric and me something to debate over the weeks and months.
