A tornado down the road

Like most people living in Britain, I tend to think of this as a country which doesn’t have tornadoes – but today I was reminded how wrong I am. In the Lodon borough in which I live (Brent), this morning there was a tornado that damaged around 150 homes and injured six people.
In fact, I wasn’t at home today. I was in Guildford, just south-west of London, attending a meeting of DEFRA officials to speak to them about the work of Postwatch. At about 11 am – the time of the tornado in Kensal Rise – we had a very heavy hail storm.
It seems that Britain has around 50 tornadoes a year, which makes it the most tornado-strife country in Europe, but (fortunately) I’ve never experienced one – although today I could have come close.
