What’s your favourite Beatles song?

Each 10 July, Liverpool celebrates Beatles Day. The event marks the anniversary of the Fab Four’s triumphant homecoming to Liverpool after they conquered America in 1964.
This year, various famous people have been asked for their favourite Beatles song and the leaders of our political parties have answered as follows:

  • Gordon Brown – “All My Loving”
  • David Cameron – “The Long And Winding Road”
  • Nick Clegg – “A Day In The Life”

My favourite is “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”. As a teenager, I found this such a sensual thought and even today I enjoy holding my wife’s hand. For my wife Vee, the choice is “Here Comes The Sun” because it is so joyful.
What’s your favourite?

It’s so difficult to choose just one favorite Beatles song! How to weigh all the classic singles, such as Help!, Ticket To Ride, She Loves You, Get Back, I Want To Hold Your Hand, against the great album tracks: You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away, In My Life, And I Love Her, A Day In The Life, the lesser known classics: I’m Only Sleeping, For No One, I’ve Just Seen A Face, Things We Said Today, not to mention the spirited criticism of tax rates in Taxman, “music hall” hits such as Your Mother Should Know, and that unforgettable prelude to Sgt. Pepper: Tomorrow Never Knows?
I prefer the Beatles’ “middle period”, from about 1965-7, when they were writing more than just pop songs, but before some of the dreary, pretentious material that appeared on, e.g., Abbey Road.
So, in no particular order, here is a tentative top five, rather than top one!
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
    Yesterday
    I Feel Fine
    Paperback Writer
    Girl
As an aside, have you heard that when the Beatles and Bob Dylan first met, he offered them a joint? He was surprised when they refused (this must have been early-mid ’64, before they began experimenting), pointing to the line from I Want To Hold Your Hand, “It’s such a feeling that my love,
    I get high”!
