Farewell to our special cat

In this year’s Christmas letter sent out over the last couple of weeks, we wrote:

“In February, our cat Honey will be 20 years old – that’s 96 in human years! She is clearly feeling her age and is happiest when she is within stroking distance of Vee – very high maintenance.”

Well, sadly, Honey didn’t make it to her 20th birthday or even to Christmas. She had become so frail that we decided that the kindest thing was to have her put to sleep.

This morning, two women from our local vet came round to our home to perform the act. The young Israeli vet gave her the injection and Honey was out almost at once – eyes open and tongue out. Both Vee and I had tears welling in our eyes.

We have buried her in her favourite flower bed covered up with the kitchen towel on which she used to rest on Vee’s knees each evening in front of the television.

She has been wonderful companion. You can see how she entered out lives and view my favourite photograph of her here.

Oh Roger, I’m so sorry. I know what a difficult decision this must have been for you both. However I hope you can both take comfort from all the years of love and happiness Honey gave you (and you to her). It is a cliche, but she did have a good innings. I hope we can all be so lucky.

It is so sad and I know its daft, but it is just like losing a member of the family. Honey had a good life and if I come back I want to be a cat who is lucky enough to get a good family home and be much loved.

I’m sorry to hear about Honey! We just got your Christmas card yesterday and were remarking about what you had written about Honey! It is kind of them to come by your house. I don’t think an American vet would do that for any reason.

Damian, Mavis and Dana, Thank you so much for your kind comments.

Vee has now planted new flowers on Honey’s grave so it looks very colourful and reassuring.

Several local cats have been round to express their condolences so our home is not a totally cat-free zone.
