The world’s most and least peaceful states

The Global Peace Index (GPI), produced annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace, is the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness. It gauges ongoing domestic and international conflict, safety and security in society, and militarisation in 153 countries by taking into account 23 separate indicators.

The 2011 report is now available. The most peaceful country is Iceland, while the least peaceful is Somalia. The UK is 26th with neighbouring Ireland 11th. The USA comes 82nd with next door Canada as 8th.  The Czech Republic – where I was last week – comes very high in 5th place. Russia – which is the worst-rated nation that I have visited – is placed at 147th (seventh from the bottom).

You can check out the 10 most peaceful states and the 10 least peaceful states plus an interactive map of the world here.
