Which company is this?

It is one of the largest employers in the world. Its workforce of around 520,000 employees is present in more than 220 countries and territories on five continents. Almost half the staff work outside the company’s base country.
So what is this company? Microsoft? Google? Wal-Mart? Where is it based? The United States? Japan? And what does it do?

The company is Deutsche Post World Net. As the name might suggest, it is German and it is in the business of mails and logistics.
I mention it because I’ve been at an international postal conference all day where I was a speaker on the universal service obligation representing the UK consumer watchdog Postwatch. When I heard the speaker from Deutsche Post explain the figures for his company’s workforce, I thought that it might surprise you.
ICT companies may be making the headlines and the profits, but it’s businesses that collect, sort, and deliver letters, packets and parcels that provide the greatest employment.

    yes, surprising!
Chinese army, Indian railway, British NHS are other big employers in the world.
    (bigger than the postwatch, even.)
