How many are dying?

The events in the Middle East over the last few weeks have been horrific – but they are taking the media’s attention away from other killing fields. Today’s “Guardian” newspaper states that, over the last 17 days, the death toll in Lebanon, Gaza and Israel has been 616 – each death a terrible tragedy.
Yet, in the same period, 342 have lost their lives in Afghanistan, 793 have been killed in Iraq, and in the Democratic Republic of Congo 1,200 are dying each day from violence, hunger and disease, half of them children.
