Birth and death in Cornwall

I was interested in the news that, while on holiday in Cornwall, the Prime Minister’s wife Samantha Cameron has unexpectedly given birth to a baby girl, their fourth child, who arrived at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

My wife’s father – the Czech wartime night fighter ace Karel Kuttelwascher – was taken to this hospital when he became ill while on holiday and died there of a heart attack on 17 August 1959. He was just 42.

Interestingly, until Cherie Blair had a baby in 2000 while her husband was Prime Minister, no premier’s wife had given birth for more than 150 years. Now it has happened again, after just 10 years. Our Prime Ministers and their wives are getting younger.
