It’s St Swithin’s Day

Here in the UK, today – 15 July – is known as St Swithin’s Day. And what is all that about, I hear my non-British readers asking.

Well, the story goes that, if we have rain or sun on this day, then we will have the same weather for the next 40 days. You can read a fuller explanation here.

Of course, the whole thing is nonsense, but it reflects the British near-obsession with our weather.

Note 1: It’s been raining here in London today so maybe we’ll have a lot of rain in the next month or so.

Note 2: In the first six months of this year, Britain experienced the driest first half of the calendar year since 1914, so maybe we need more rain.

Note 3: The most recent novel that I’ve read is called “One Day” and that day, revisited each 12 months for 20 years, is St Swithin’s Day – you can read my review of the novel here.
