Two facts about the UN

This morning, I was on the way to a meeting at the Foreign Office when I passed Westminster Central Hall opposite Westminster Abbey. I saw two young tourists taking photographs and struck up a conversation. I found that they were from South Korea, so I told them two things that they didn’t know – and you might not either.
First, Westminster Central Hall was the location of the very first meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on 10 January 1946 and I pointed out the wall plaque commemorating the event. Second, former South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon is almost certain to succeed Kofi Annan as General Secretary of the UN following a crucial coloured card vote.
