Who brought down the Twin Towers? (1)
I’m sure that it was Al-Qaida – not Iraq, not Iran, not Israel. According to an item in today’s “Observer” newspaper, however: “One recent survey showed that a third of Americans believed their government played some role in 9/11 or allowed it. The theories usually suggest the World Trade Centre was demolished by explosives, triggered after the planes hit, to give the US an excuse to invade Middle Eastern countries and steal their oil.”
This is in spite of the fact that, putting aside issues like morality and politics, such a demolition would have been impossible according to a report from the National Institute of Standards and Technology. In fact, this is just one of 11 conspiracy theories examined and refuted by the US Department of State.
But, of course, if you’re a conspiracy theorist these reports will simply confirm your view that the conspiracy is larger than rational people can imagine, involving the whole scientific community and the whole American government.
It is this sort of terribly dangerous thinking that led me to craft my web site essay on “The Reason For Truth”. I am pleased that already one teacher at a college in the United States has told me that she is going to use it with her students.

Oh no, Roger, don’t tell me you’re part of the conspiracy, too!

How did you know this, Nick? Are you spying on me?!?

Roger, As a fairly smart man, why do you always seem to believe what you read in the papers ? AG

Actually, Tony, as I explained in my piece “The Reason For Truth”, I proportion my belief to the evidence, so I don’t simply believe what I read in the newspapers. How do you decide what to believe?
