A review of the Oscar-contending film “The Revenant”

At this year’s Academy Awards, “The Revenant” will be up for the highest number of awards having been shortlisted in no less than 12 categories.

It is a stunning work which I have now seen. You can read my review here.

Glad you enjoyed it, Roger: have been looking forward to your review. When I saw it, I realised (and not in any of the obvious scenes) that there was no-one in a 90% full cinema that was making any sort of noise. There was no coughing, no spluttering, certainly no talking, no rustling of sweet wrappers, and no fidgeting. You could have heard a pin drop right through a 2 1/2 hour film. And that absolute silence in the audience, with everyone absolutely engaged in the story, added hugely to the tension on the screen.

The cinematography is wonderful and dear old Len goes through a lot for his Oscar; the direction is also excellent and I particularly enjoyed Tom Hardy as Fitzgerald. All worthy awards winners, I would think. As a story, there are some weaknesses and confusions, however, particularly towards the end, although the very last frames were excellently done and re-orient the film back to its main themes.

I’m waiting now for 28 February when the Academy announces the results of the votes. Some tough choices to be made but I think Leonardo is close to a certainly.
