{"id":8963,"date":"2012-07-21T21:52:05","date_gmt":"2012-07-21T20:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=8963"},"modified":"2012-07-22T15:24:07","modified_gmt":"2012-07-22T14:24:07","slug":"the-tradition-of-bun-throwing-in-abingdon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=8963","title":{"rendered":"The tradition of bun throwing in Abingdon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vee and I spent today in Abingdon visiting our Chinese &#8216;family&#8217;: \u00a0Zhihao, Hua and five year old Joshua. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abingdon-on-Thames\">Abingdon<\/a> claims to be the oldest continuously populated town in Britain with people living there for some 6,000 years. Certainly it is very proud of its history and traditions.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks ago, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abingdonmuseum.org.uk\/\">Abingdon County Hall Museum<\/a> was reopened and this afternoon we visited the museum which has three floors of exhibits and a wonderful viewing vantage from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abingdonmuseum.org.uk\/museumview01.htm\">the roof<\/a>.\u00a0I was fascinated to learn that Abingdon has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abingdonmuseum.org.uk\/museumbun.htm\">a tradition of fruit bun throwing<\/a> from the building which stretches back as far as 1760. All sorts of national and royal events have been marked in this way. This strikes me as being such a very English activity and, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/FAQ.html#Puddings\">a lover all things sweet<\/a>, I think it is a wonderful idea.<\/p>\n<p>We had a good lunch at a Lebanese restaurant called <a href=\"http:\/\/lemongroverestaurant.co.uk\/about\/\">&#8220;Lemon Grove&#8221;<\/a> where we were served by a guy who is a Christian Syrian. Throughout our meal, the restaurant played the haunting music of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fairuz\">Fairuz<\/a>. Just over a year ago, Vee and I visited Syria and Lebanon [an account of our trip <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/Levant.html\">here<\/a>] and the meal reminded us of that happy time before the revolution broke out in Syria a couple of weeks later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vee and I spent today in Abingdon visiting our Chinese &#8216;family&#8217;: \u00a0Zhihao, Hua and five year old Joshua.
