In  fact, the distinctive sound is the influence of Arabic from the one-time  Islamic occupation.<\/p>\n<p>Very little is pronounced as it looks &#8211; even the vowels. So, &#8216;thank you&#8217; is &#8216;obrigado&#8217; (for a male speaker) but is pronounced &#8216;obrigardu&#8217;.
