The report ranks 169 countries by how developed they are as measured by a combination of measures covering education, health and inequality.<\/p>\n<p>You will find the basic rankings in Table 1 <a href=\"http:\/\/hdr.undp.org\/en\/media\/HDR_2010_EN_Tables.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The top five are:<\/p>\n<p>1. Norway<br \/>\n2. Australia<br \/>\n3. New Zealand<br \/>\n4. United States<br \/>\n5. Ireland<\/p>\n<p>The bottom five are:<\/p>\n<p>165.\u00a0 Mozambique<br \/>\n166.\u00a0 Burundi<br \/>\n167.\u00a0 Niger<br \/>\n168.\u00a0 Democratic Republic of Congo<br \/>\n169.\u00a0 Zimbabwe<\/p>\n<p>The UK is only 26th.<\/p>\n<p>The report reveals that the world financial crisis has caused 34 million people to become unemployed and pushed a further 64 million below the income poverty threshold of a mere $1.25 (77p) a day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The publication by the United Nations of the 20th annual edition of its human development report provides a wealth of fascinating data.
