{"id":3435,"date":"2010-08-27T09:04:17","date_gmt":"2010-08-27T08:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=3435"},"modified":"2010-08-27T09:04:17","modified_gmt":"2010-08-27T08:04:17","slug":"did-you-know-that-there-was-a-book-of-roger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=3435","title":{"rendered":"Did you know that there was a Book of Roger?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost three years ago now, I did<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=761\"> a blog posting<\/a> about King Roger II of Sicily (1095-1154) and speculated that I might have been named after him because my mother came from Naples which was part of Roger&#8217;s kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve recently been watching a BBC2 television series on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b00schjq\">&#8220;The Normans&#8221;<\/a> which included the fascinating information that this king commissioned in 1138 a work known as the<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tabula_Rogeriana\"> Book of Roger<\/a> which was\u00a0 finished in 1154.\u00a0 It was the best world atlas and description of the world of the time and remained so for some three centuries.<\/p>\n<p>The effort was called &#8220;the book of pleasant journeys into faraway lands&#8221;.\u00a0 I like that and it resonates with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/2010\/travel.shtml\">my own travels<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Almost three years ago now, I did a blog posting about King Roger II of Sicily (1095-1154) and speculated that I might have been named after him because my mother came from Naples which was part of Roger&#8217;s kingdom.
