﻿{"id":30033,"date":"2026-01-23T19:41:59","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T18:41:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=30033"},"modified":"2026-01-23T19:42:45","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T18:42:45","slug":"ever-heard-of-louis-spohr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=30033","title":{"rendered":"Ever heard of Louis Spohr?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I hadn&#8217;t until I was told about him by a patient to whom I was talking while doing my weekly volunteering at the Older Persons&#8217; Unit of St Thomas Hospital in central London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Spohr\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Spohr\">the entry<\/a> in Wikipedia:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Louis Spohr<\/strong>, 5 April 1784&nbsp;\u2013 22 October 1859), baptized&nbsp;<strong>Ludewig Spohr<\/strong>,&nbsp;later often in the modern German form of the name&nbsp;<strong>Ludwig<\/strong>, was a German&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Composer\">composer<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Violin\">violinist<\/a>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conducting\">conductor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highly regarded during his lifetime,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Spohr#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Spohr composed ten&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Symphony\">symphonies<\/a>, ten&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Opera\">operas<\/a>, eighteen&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Violin\">violin<\/a>&nbsp;concerti, four&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clarinet\">clarinet<\/a> concerti, four&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oratorio\">oratorios<\/a>, and various works for small ensemble, chamber music, and art songs.&nbsp;Spohr invented the violin&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinrest\">chinrest<\/a>&nbsp;and the orchestral&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rehearsal_letter\">rehearsal mark<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His output spans the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transition_from_Classical_to_Romantic_music\">transition<\/a>&nbsp;between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Classical_period_(music)\">Classical<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romantic_music\">Romantic music<\/a>,&nbsp;but fell into obscurity following his death, when his music was rarely heard.
