But I&#8217;ve never been to Beringia and, to be honest, I&#8217;d never heard of it until I watched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbcearth.com\/shows\/human\">BBC series &#8220;Human&#8221;.<\/a> I won&#8217;t be visiting it because it doesn&#8217;t exist any more. This edited extract from Wikipedia explains more:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Beringia<\/strong>&nbsp;is a prehistoric geographical region, defined as the land and maritime area bounded on the west by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lena_River\">Lena River<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russia\">Russia<\/a>; on the east by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mackenzie_River\">Mackenzie River<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada\">Canada<\/a>; on the north by 72\u00b0 north latitude in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chukchi_Sea\">Chukchi Sea<\/a>; and on the south by the tip of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kamchatka_Peninsula\">Kamchatka Peninsula<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area includes land lying on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_American_Plate\">North American Plate<\/a>&nbsp;and Siberian land east of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chersky_Range\">Chersky Range<\/a>. At various times, it formed a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Land_bridge\">land bridge<\/a>&nbsp;referred to as the&nbsp;<strong>Bering land bridge<\/strong>&nbsp;or the&nbsp;<strong>Bering Strait land bridge<\/strong>&nbsp;that was up to 1,000&nbsp;km (620&nbsp;mi) wide at its greatest extent and which covered an area as large as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Columbia\">British Columbia<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alberta\">Alberta<\/a>&nbsp;together,&nbsp;totaling about 1.6&nbsp;million&nbsp;km<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;(620,000&nbsp;sq&nbsp;mi), allowing biological dispersal to occur between Asia and North America. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is believed that a small human population of at most a few thousand arrived in Beringia from eastern Siberia during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Last_Glacial_Maximum\">Last Glacial Maximum<\/a>&nbsp;before expanding into the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peopling_of_the_Americas\">settlement of the Americas<\/a>&nbsp;sometime after 16,500 years before present (YBP).&nbsp;This would have occurred as the American glaciers blocking the way southward melted but before the bridge was covered by the sea about 11,000 YBP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So far, I&#8217;ve visited 90 countries and I&#8217;d like to visit a few more if I can.
