And where did it come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a noun, it has three meanings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>a&nbsp;vacation&nbsp;or&nbsp;leave&nbsp;of&nbsp;absence&nbsp;granted&nbsp;to&nbsp;an&nbsp;enlisted&nbsp;person&nbsp;<\/li><li>a&nbsp;temporary&nbsp;leave&nbsp;of&nbsp;absence&nbsp;authorised&nbsp;for&nbsp;a&nbsp;prisoner&nbsp;from&nbsp;a&nbsp;penitentiary&nbsp;<\/li><li>a&nbsp;usually&nbsp;temporary&nbsp;layoff&nbsp;from&nbsp;work&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly,  in current circumstances of the coronavirus crisis, it is the last meaning that is relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The origin of the word is the period \u00a01615\u201325.
