I was reminded of the situation this week when I travelled by train from London to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bridgwater.net\/\">Bridgwater<\/a> to attend a conference on next generation access or super-fast broadband.<\/p>\n<p>Now Bridgwater is not actually that far west, but door-to-door the outward journey took me four and half hours (with train delays) and the return trip took me five hours (with a train cancellation).<\/p>\n<p>At least the scenery in Somerset was wonderful and the weather was glorious. The place names around there are quaint; between Bristol and Bridgwater, the train stopped at Nailsea &amp; Backwell, Yatton, Worle, Weston Milton, Weston-super-Mare and Highbridge &amp; Burnham.<\/p>\n<p>Also I started to read an excellent novel called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/product\/034912132X\/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=103612307&amp;pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&amp;pf_rd_t=201&amp;pf_rd_i=1408700778&amp;pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&amp;pf_rd_r=1E16EYC2S0GZDVQ0GGFE\">&#8220;The Glass Room&#8221;<\/a> by Simon Mawer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>England is one of those countries where it is much easier to travel north-south than it is to journey east-west.
