{"id":25240,"date":"2019-11-04T11:05:54","date_gmt":"2019-11-04T10:05:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=25240"},"modified":"2019-11-04T11:05:55","modified_gmt":"2019-11-04T10:05:55","slug":"enjoying-the-different-versions-of-his-dark-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=25240","title":{"rendered":"Enjoying the different versions of &#8220;His Dark Materials&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It&#8217;s great that at the weekend BBC One began broadcasting an eight-part television adaptation of the first novel in the brilliant \u201cHis Dark Materials\u201d trilogy by Philip Pullman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I really admired the books:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>\u201cNorthern Lights\u201d<\/em> \u2013 my review&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/fbooks.html#HDM1\">here<\/a><\/li><li><em>\u2018The Subtle Knife\u201d<\/em> -my review&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/fbooks.html#HDM2\">here<\/a><\/li><li><em>\u201cThe Amber Spyglass\u201d<\/em> \u2013&nbsp;my review<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/fbooks.html#HDM3\">&nbsp;here<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The first novel was turned into a film called <em>\u201cThe Golden Compass\u201d<\/em> [my review <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/Films:G#TGC\">here<\/a>], but it did not have critical success and the other two books were never filmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also I saw the two-part stage production at London\u2019s National Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BBC adaptation gives eight hours rather than the two in the movie to a portrayal of &#8220;Northern Lights&#8221; (or &#8220;The Golden Compass&#8221;, as it is known in the US), it maintains the anti-clerical stance of the novel which was rather lost in the film, and it makes a point of using some black actors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s &#8220;Guardian&#8221; newspaper has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2019\/nov\/03\/his-dark-materials-review-bbc\">a review<\/a> headlined: \u00a0<em>&#8220;a riveting realisation of Philip Pullman&#8217;s magic&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s great that at the weekend BBC One began broadcasting an eight-part television adaptation of the first novel in the brilliant \u201cHis Dark Materials\u201d trilogy by Philip Pullman.
