{"id":2476,"date":"2010-05-17T16:17:53","date_gmt":"2010-05-17T15:17:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=2476"},"modified":"2010-05-17T16:32:49","modified_gmt":"2010-05-17T15:32:49","slug":"my-participation-in-a-medical-research-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=2476","title":{"rendered":"My participation in a medical research project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the Spring of last year, I took part in a 12-week medical trial of a new &#8216;polypill&#8217; and wrote about the experience on this blog, the last entry being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=1466\">this one<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, my wife and I spent two and a quarter hours at an assessment centre in Hounslow in west London as participants in a major medical research project called &#8220;UK Biobank&#8221;. The initiative aims to  improve the prevention, diagnosis and  treatment of a wide range of  serious and life-threatening illnesses \u2013 including  cancer, heart  diseases, diabetes, arthritis and forms of dementia.\u00a0 The project is recruiting 500,000 people aged 40-69   from across the country to take part.<\/p>\n<p>The visit consisted of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukbiobank.ac.uk\/docs\/touchscreenquestionnaire.pdf\"> touch-screen questionnaire<\/a> covering medical history, life style and diet<\/li>\n<li>A touch screen hearing test with headphones<\/li>\n<li>Some touch screen memory tests ( I forget the detail!)<\/li>\n<li>A whole <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukbiobank.ac.uk\/assessment\/whathappens.php#Measurements\">series of physical tests<\/a>, including eye tests, blood pressure measurement, lung function test, a cycling exercise, and blood, urine &amp; saliva samples<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Information on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukbiobank.ac.uk\/about\/what.php\">Biobank<\/a> here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Spring of last year, I took part in a 12-week medical trial of a new &#8216;polypill&#8217; and wrote about the experience on this blog, the last entry being this one.
