﻿{"id":24680,"date":"2019-05-31T23:23:47","date_gmt":"2019-05-31T22:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=24680"},"modified":"2019-05-31T23:23:49","modified_gmt":"2019-05-31T22:23:49","slug":"whats-so-special-about-the-orbit-of-the-planet-mercury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=24680","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s so special about the orbit of the planet Mercury?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Mercury is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tidal_locking\">tidally locked<\/a>&nbsp;with the Sun in a 3:2&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orbital_resonance\">spin-orbit resonance<\/a>,&nbsp;and rotates in a way that is unique in the Solar System. <\/p><p>As seen relative to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fixed_stars\">fixed stars<\/a>, it rotates on its axis exactly three times for every two revolutions it makes around the Sun.&nbsp;As seen from the Sun, in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frame_of_reference\">frame of reference<\/a>&nbsp;that rotates with the orbital motion, it appears to rotate only once every two Mercurian years. An observer on Mercury would therefore see only one day every two Mercurian years.<\/p><p>Mercury&#8217;s axis has the smallest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Axial_tilt\">tilt<\/a>&nbsp;of any of the Solar System&#8217;s planets (about \u200b<sup>1<\/sup>\u2044<sub>30<\/sub>&nbsp;degree). Its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orbital_eccentricity\">orbital eccentricity<\/a>&nbsp;is the largest of all known planets in the Solar System;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_(planet)#cite_note-dwarf_planet-18\">[<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perihelion\">perihelion<\/a>, Mercury&#8217;s distance from the Sun is only about two-thirds (or 66%) of its distance at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aphelion\">aphelion<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an extract from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercury_(planet)\">the Wikipedia page on Mercury<\/a>.
