A strength of the series is that &#8211; as with <em>&#8220;The West Wing&#8221;<\/em> &#8211; it features very contemporary and controversial political issues. So, for instance, a recent episode highlighted the impact of climate change and featured the annihilation of the Pacific Island of Nauru. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I realised that I knew so little about Nauru but found information on Wikipedia:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Nauru<\/strong>, officially the&nbsp;<strong>Republic of Nauru<\/strong> and formerly known as&nbsp;<strong>Pleasant Island<\/strong>, is an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Island_country\">island country<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Micronesia\">Micronesia<\/a>, a subregion of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oceania\">Oceania<\/a>, in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pacific_Ocean\">Central Pacific<\/a>. Its nearest neighbour is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Banaba_Island\">Banaba Island<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kiribati\">Kiribati<\/a>, 300 kilometres (190&nbsp;mi) to the east. With only a 21-square-kilometre (8.1&nbsp;sq&nbsp;mi) area, Nauru is the third-smallest state on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_area\">list of countries and dependencies by area<\/a>&nbsp;behind&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vatican_City\">Vatican City<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monaco\">Monaco<\/a>, making it the smallest state in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Pacific_Ocean\">South Pacific Ocean<\/a>, the smallest island state, and the smallest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republic\">republic<\/a>. Its population is 11,347, making it the third smallest on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_population\">list of countries and dependencies by population<\/a>, after the Vatican and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuvalu\">Tuvalu<\/a>.<\/p><p>Settled by people from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Micronesia\">Micronesia<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polynesia\">Polynesia<\/a>&nbsp;<abbr title=\"circa\">c.<\/abbr>\u2009 1000 BC, Nauru was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Annexation\">annexed<\/a>&nbsp;and claimed as a colony by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_Empire\">German Empire<\/a>&nbsp;in the late 19th century. After&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_I\">World War&nbsp;I<\/a>, Nauru became a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/League_of_Nations_mandate\">League of Nations mandate<\/a>&nbsp;administered by Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. During&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">World War&nbsp;II<\/a>, Nauru was occupied by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Empire_of_Japan\">Japanese<\/a>&nbsp;troops, who were bypassed by the Allied advance across the Pacific. After the war ended, the country entered into&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=United_Nations_trusteeship&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">United Nations trusteeship<\/a>. Nauru gained its independence in 1968, and became a member of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pacific_Community\">Pacific Community<\/a>&nbsp;(SPC) in 1969.<\/p><p>Nauru is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phosphorite\">phosphate-rock<\/a>&nbsp;island with rich deposits near the surface, which allowed easy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surface_mining\">strip mining&nbsp;<\/a>operations. When the phosphate reserves were exhausted, and the island&#8217;s environment had been seriously harmed by mining, the trust that had been established to manage the island&#8217;s wealth diminished in value. To earn income, Nauru briefly became a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tax_haven\">tax haven<\/a>&nbsp;and illegal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Money_laundering\">money laundering<\/a>&nbsp;centre.&nbsp;From 2001 to 2008, and again from 2012, it accepted aid from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Government_of_Australia\">Australian Government<\/a>&nbsp;in exchange for hosting the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nauru_Regional_Processing_Centre\">Nauru Regional Processing Centre<\/a>, an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australian_immigration_detention_facilities\">offshore Australian immigration detention facility<\/a>.
