{"id":23597,"date":"2018-09-28T12:52:35","date_gmt":"2018-09-28T11:52:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=23597"},"modified":"2018-09-28T12:52:35","modified_gmt":"2018-09-28T11:52:35","slug":"citizens-advice-super-complaint-to-cma-on-the-injustice-of-loyalty-payments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=23597","title":{"rendered":"Citizens Advice super-complaint to CMA on the injustice of loyalty payments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/about-us\/policy\/policy-research-topics\/consumer-policy-research\/consumer-policy-research\/excessive-prices-for-disengaged-consumers-a-super-complaint-to-the-competition-and-markets-authority\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">super-complaint<\/a>\u00a0has been lodged today by Citizens Advice with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) calling for the regulator to investigate the loyalty penalty in a number of essential markets: mobile handsets, broadband, mortgages, home insurance\u00a0<span id=\"gmail-m_-6542449837635493912gmail-23\" class=\"gmail-m_-6542449837635493912gmail-gr_ gmail-m_-6542449837635493912gmail-gr_23 gmail-m_-6542449837635493912gmail-gr-alert gmail-m_-6542449837635493912gmail-gr_gramm gmail-m_-6542449837635493912gmail-gr_inline_cards gmail-m_-6542449837635493912gmail-gr_run_anim gmail-m_-6542449837635493912gmail-Punctuation gmail-m_-6542449837635493912gmail-only-ins gmail-m_-6542449837635493912gmail-replaceWithoutSep\">and<\/span>\u00a0savings.<\/p>\n<div>Research by Citizens Advice has found that consumers lose over \u00a34 billion a year to the loyalty penalty, with 8 in 10 people paying a significantly higher price for remaining with their current supplier in at least one of these markets.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>This practice is considered unfair by 89% of people, and certain vulnerable groups &#8211; such as those on low incomes, older people and people with mental health problems &#8211; are likely to experience the financial impact of the loyalty penalty disproportionately.<\/p>\n<p>Citizens Advice is calling on the CMA to undertake a thorough market study to investigate all markets where the loyalty penalty may occur, and to propose remedies that can be implemented by the CMA itself, sector regulators and the government.<\/p>\n<p>The CMA has now invited submission of evidence at <a href=\"mailto:LoyaltyPenalty@cma.gov.uk\">LoyaltyPenalty@cma.gov.uk<\/a>. The deadline for doing so is 14 October 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The CMA now has 90 days to investigate and publish its response to the super-complaint.
