{"id":22582,"date":"2018-02-06T09:17:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-06T08:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=22582"},"modified":"2018-02-06T09:17:00","modified_gmt":"2018-02-06T08:17:00","slug":"contemporary-cinema-3-the-post-baby-driver-blade-runner-2049","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=22582","title":{"rendered":"Contemporary cinema (3): &#8220;The Post&#8221;, &#8220;Baby Driver&#8221;, &#8220;Blade Runner 2049&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve now attended three more weekly sessions at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylit.ac.uk\/\">City Literary Institute<\/a> in central London of an evening course called \u201cContemporary Cinema: The Best Films Of The Year\u201d conducted by the American John Wischmeyer.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the pattern has been that we view and discuss clips from an acclaimed recent film and then compare it to a couple of significant older movies.<\/p>\n<p>In Week 3, we focused on \u201cThe Post\u201d [my review <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/Films:P#Post\">here<\/a>]. This film has only recently been released so we could not see clips but viewed a review on the BBC by Mark Kermode. We then compared it to the earlier \u00a0(1976) \u201cAll The President\u2019s Men\u201d (which I have seen) \u2013 both movies movies concern the \u201cWashington Post\u201d \u2013 and reference was also made to another newspaper-centred film \u201cSpotlight\u201d [my review <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/Films:S#Spotlight\">here<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In Week 4, we turned to &#8220;Baby Driver&#8221;\u00a0[my review <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/Films:B#Baby\">here<\/a>] and viewed clips of the opening car chase sequence and the following buying-the-coffee long take. The obvious comparison film was &#8220;Drive&#8221;\u00a0[my review <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/Films:D#Drive\">here<\/a>] but we also looked at a clip of the car chase in the much older (1968) &#8220;Bullitt&#8221; (which I have seen).<\/p>\n<p>Week 5 was all about &#8220;Blade Runner 2049&#8221; [my review <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/Films:B#Blade\">here<\/a>] and we watched &#8211; with 3D glasses &#8211; extended sequences from this long movie. Again there was an obvious comparison: this time the original &#8220;Blade Runner&#8221; [my review <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/clfilms.html#BR\">here<\/a>] where we took in the sequence where Dekker first meets Rachael.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll miss the next two sessions of the course since I&#8217;m about to take a trip to China to celebrate the Chinese New Year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve now attended three more weekly sessions at the City Literary Institute in central London of an evening course called \u201cContemporary Cinema: The Best Films Of The Year\u201d conducted by the American John Wischmeyer.
