It is set in northern Italian at the end of the Second World War and some of the action takes place in Salo.<\/p>\n<p>The relevant Wikipedia page opens as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The <b>Italian Social Republic<\/b>, informally known as the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Republic of Sal\u00f2\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republic_of_Sal%C3%B2\">Republic of Sal\u00f2<\/a>, was a <a title=\"List of World War II puppet states\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_World_War_II_puppet_states#Germany\">state<\/a> with limited <a title=\"Diplomatic recognition\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diplomatic_recognition\">recognition<\/a> that was created during the later part of <a title=\"World War II\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">World War II<\/a>, existing from the beginning of German occupation of Italy in September 1943 until surrender of German troops in Italy in April 1945.\u00a0The Italian Social Republic was the second and last incarnation of the <a title=\"Italian Fascism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_Fascism\">Italian Fascist<\/a> state and was led by <i><a title=\"Duce\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duce\">Duce<\/a><\/i> <a title=\"Benito Mussolini\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benito_Mussolini\">Benito Mussolini<\/a> and his reformed <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Abolished monarchy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abolished_monarchy\">anti-monarchist<\/a> <a title=\"Republican Fascist Party\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republican_Fascist_Party\">Republican Fascist Party<\/a> which tried to modernise and revise <a title=\"Fascism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fascism\">fascist<\/a> doctrine into a more moderate and sophisticated direction.<\/p>\n<p>The state declared <a title=\"Rome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rome\">Rome<\/a> its capital, but was <a title=\"De facto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/De_facto\"><i>de facto<\/i><\/a> centered on <a title=\"Sal\u00f2\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sal%C3%B2\">Sal\u00f2<\/a>\u00a0(hence its colloquial name), a small town on <a title=\"Lake Garda\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_Garda\">Lake Garda<\/a>, near <a title=\"Brescia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brescia\">Brescia<\/a>, where Mussolini and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were headquartered.
