{"id":2199,"date":"2010-03-22T16:49:57","date_gmt":"2010-03-22T15:49:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=2199"},"modified":"2010-03-23T10:15:20","modified_gmt":"2010-03-23T09:15:20","slug":"yes-we-can","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=2199","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Yes we did&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s terrific news that at long\u00a0 last President Barack Obama has managed to win health care reform and extend coverage to some 32 million Americans.\u00a0 But it was a close call won only after enormous effort and much compromise.<\/p>\n<p>Last night, the House of Representatives approved the bill passed by the Senate on Christmas Eve by 219  votes to 212, with 34 Democrats joining voting against  it and not a single Republican voting for it.\u00a0 So much for Obama&#8217;s genuine efforts to promote bipartisanship,<\/p>\n<p>You can see the President&#8217;s reaction <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/americas\/8579354.stm\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The result is not just a victory for Americans.\u00a0 It has important implications for the world.\u00a0 If Obama had failed, his authority would have been seriously weakened and his ability to influence world events much diminished.\u00a0 Instead his authority is strengthened and now he can and must use it on global issues such as climate change and the Middle East.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s terrific news that at long\u00a0 last President Barack Obama has managed to win health care reform and extend coverage to some 32 million Americans.\u00a0 But it was a close call won only after enormous effort and much compromise.
