{"id":20799,"date":"2016-12-21T10:05:20","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T09:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=20799"},"modified":"2016-12-21T10:05:20","modified_gmt":"2016-12-21T09:05:20","slug":"volunteering-with-crisis-at-christmas-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=20799","title":{"rendered":"Volunteering with Crisis at Christmas (3)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year, I am going to be a volunteer with the charity for the homeless <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crisis.org.uk\/pages\/christmas.html\">Crisis at Christmas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the induction session for new volunteers, we were given some background information on the causes of homelessness:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The lack of housing overall<\/li>\n<li>The lack of affordable housing<\/li>\n<li>The loss of a tenancy<\/li>\n<li>Lacking work and\/or skills<\/li>\n<li>In work, but low pay and\/or hours<\/li>\n<li>Breakdown of a relationship<\/li>\n<li>Leaving prison or care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So why do the homeless come to a centre run by Crisis at Christmas?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Companionship &#8211; someone to talk to<\/li>\n<li>Safety &#8211; somewhere they will not be harassed<\/li>\n<li>Food &#8211; warm and nourishing<\/li>\n<li>Sleep &#8211; warm and safe<\/li>\n<li>Medical services such as dentistry and podiatry<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;Feel good&#8217; services such as massage and entertainment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And who are the guests? Based on last year&#8217;s statistics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>84% are male<\/li>\n<li>The age range is 18-93<\/li>\n<li>The average age is 46<\/li>\n<li>The top three nationalities are British (about half), Polish and Romanian<\/li>\n<li>They are not all rough sleepers but include the &#8216;hidden homeless&#8217; from squats and so on<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year, I am going to be a volunteer with the charity for the homeless Crisis at Christmas.
