This time, we will be travelling with our young Chinese &#8216;family&#8217; so we will see China through Chinese eyes and have the opportunity for many more conversations. One of the questions I want to put to Chinese people that we meet is when they expect the Chinese economy to become the largest in the world.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economy_of_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China\">this page<\/a> of Wikipedia: &#8220;The <a title=\"Economy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economy\">economy<\/a> of the <a title=\"People's Republic of China\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/People%27s_Republic_of_China\">People&#8217;s Republic of Chin<\/a><strong><a title=\"People's Republic of China\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/People%27s_Republic_of_China\">a<\/a><\/strong> is the <a title=\"List of countries by GDP (nominal)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28nominal%29\">third largest<\/a> in the world, after the <a title=\"Economy of the United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economy_of_the_United_States\">United States<\/a> and <a title=\"Economy of Japan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economy_of_Japan\">Japan<\/a> (2008) with a nominal <a title=\"GDP\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GDP\">GDP<\/a> of <a title=\"United States dollar\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_dollar\">US$<\/a>4.91 trillion (2009) when measured in <a title=\"Exchange-rate\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exchange-rate\">exchange-rate<\/a> terms. It is the <a title=\"List of countries by GDP (PPP)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP%29\">second largest<\/a> in the world after that of the U.S. with a GDP of <a title=\"International dollar\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_dollar\">$<\/a>8.8 trillion (2009) when measured on a <a title=\"Purchasing power parity\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Purchasing_power_parity\">purchasing power parity<\/a> (PPP) basis.<sup>&#8220;<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>So when will China&#8217;s economic growth make it the largest economy on the planet? In preparation for our forthcoming trip, I&#8217;ve just started to read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/When-China-Rules-World-Kingdom\/dp\/0713992549\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1267475809&amp;sr=8-1\">&#8220;When China Rules The World&#8221;<\/a> by Martin Jacques.\u00a0 He quotes a Goldman Sachs study that forecasts that by 2025 the Chinese economy will be approaching in size that of the United States. In <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/business\/8471613.stm\">this article<\/a>, the BBC predicts that the Chinese economy will be be the biggest in 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, even then, the per capita income of the Chinese will not begin to compare with the USA, Japan and most European states.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of this month, my wife and I will be revisiting China 10 years after we last travelled to the country on what was on our first experience of this resurgent nation [see my account of the trip here].
