There was a time in the early 1970s when I met Shirley Williams – than a Labour MP and Cabinet Minister – on several occasions. \u00a0Very recently, I passed her –\u00a0now a Liberal Democrat peer – while walking near Parliament and I just couldn’t resist saying ‘hello’, even though of course she had no idea who I was.<\/p>\n
Now Shirley Williams had an amazing mother, Vera Brittain, and Brittain is perhaps best known for her memoir “Testament Of Youth”<\/em> published in 1933. \u00a0The book was turned into a film last year to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, but I only caught up with the film this weekend.
