The most dramatic event of this period was the arrival in England in 1348 of what later historians called the Black Death (at the time, it was known as &#8220;the great mortality&#8221;). At a stroke, the Black Death reduced the population of England by about a third.<br \/>\nAccording to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Death\">the account<\/a> on Wikipedia:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The total number of deaths worldwide is estimated at 75 million people, approximately 25\u201350 million of which occurred in Europe The Black Death is estimated to have killed 30% to 60% of Europe&#8217;s population.
