One the the addresses was by <strong>Berlolt Meyer<\/strong>, a German social psychologist with a bionic left hand to compensate for a birth defect. He posed interesting questions about some of the ethical issues raised by robotics.<\/p>\n<p>This week in Brighton, the\u00a0<a title=\"Fourth EUCogIII Members Conference\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eucognition.org\/index.php?page=2013-fourth-eucogiii-members-conference-gen-info\">fourth EuCogIII members&#8217; conference<\/a>\u00a0is set to tackle just these sort of \u00a0issues.\u00a0The kind of questions that will be debated include the following:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Driverless cars<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Who pays damages in an accident?<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Should children and the elderly be allowed to &#8216;drive&#8217; them too?<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Should such cars have to obey current road rules, such as speed limits?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intelligent prostheses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Will robotic enhancements give users an unfair advantage?<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Should intelligent prostheses be available to the able-bodied?<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Who decides whether you should be allowed a prosthesis?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social robots<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Could faults in or hacking of intelligent robots cause physical harm to users?<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Will intelligent robots redefine the roles of teachers, carers and others?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Implanted devices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Will intelligent implants mean the end of privacy?<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Who will technically own the device and its data?<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Will implants make exams worthless, as inherent ability becomes blurred?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medical assistants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 How far should doctors trust intelligent systems?<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Who gives consent to sharing medical records with intelligent systems?<\/p>\n<p>\u25a0 Will intelligent systems be able to democratise access to the best diagnostic medicine?<\/p>\n<p>You can read more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2013\/oct\/20\/artificial-intelligence-impact-lives\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of weeks ago, I did a long posting about my attendance at the first day of an event called FutureFest &#8211; a series of speeches about different aspects of the future.
