Today is the 150th anniversary of the commencement of the three-day Battle of Gettysburg, a decisive conflict in the long and bloody American civil war.<\/p>\n<p>A year ago, my wife and I visited the site of the battle with close American friends Mike and Laura Grace and you can read my account of the day\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/USAtrip#Day7\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the shop on the battle site, Mike bought me a novelisation of the battle entitled\u00a0<em>&#8220;The Killer Angels&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0and you can read my review of the book\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/fbooks.html#TKA\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The novel was main into a film called simply\u00a0<em>&#8220;Gettysburg&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0and you can read my review of the movie\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/FilmsE-G.html#Gettysburg\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, one should have some appreciation of the civil war as a whole and I read a book on the subject which I purchased at Gettysburg and have reviewed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/history2.html#US2\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the United States, it&#8217;s huge; elsewhere in the world, it may pass relatively unnoticed.
