{"id":10081,"date":"2012-11-24T14:28:14","date_gmt":"2012-11-24T13:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=10081"},"modified":"2012-11-24T14:30:52","modified_gmt":"2012-11-24T13:30:52","slug":"looking-out-for-leveson-and-the-struggle-to-achieve-an-effective-system-of-press-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.rogerdarlington.me.uk\/nighthawk\/?p=10081","title":{"rendered":"Looking out for Leveson &#8211; and the struggle to achieve an effective system of press regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week, I visited the offices of <a href=\"http:\/\/hackinginquiry.org\">Hacked Off<\/a>, the campaign for a free and accountable press, and, on Thursday, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.levesoninquiry.org.uk\">Leveson inquiry<\/a> will report when the judge will\u00a0make recommendations on the future of press regulation in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile I&#8217;ve been looking at the book <a href=\"http:\/\/hackinginquiry.org\/everybodys-hacked-off\/\">&#8220;Everybody&#8217;s Hacked Off&#8221;<\/a> by Brian Cathcart and I support fully the principles which he identifies as eseential to a future system of regulation of the press:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>independence from editors and proprietors<\/li>\n<li>independence from other interests including government<\/li>\n<li>the ability to provide redress<\/li>\n<li>the ability to investigate when things go wrong<\/li>\n<li>the ability to impose sanctions<\/li>\n<li>the ability to compel membership<\/li>\n<li>regular submission to external inspection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Like the Hacked Off campaign, I believe that the new system of press regulation should have statutory underpinning. It works for broadcasting in Britain and for the press in Denmark. It can work here.<\/p>\n<p>I also believe Leveson&#8217;s proposals will need to embrace content on the Internet.<\/p>\n<div>Some newspapers now have more visits online to their web site than readers of the print version of the paper. It is only a matter of time before some newspapers become online only.
